Efficiency, Safety, Planning

Efficiency.
Open fires, at best, operate around 15% efficiency compared with efficiencies of over 80% for some modern stoves. It is possible to save between two thirds to half of the wood used on an open fire – a huge saving, Stove's heat output is also very controllable and they are kinder to your decor and furnishings because the products of the combustion process are all contained within an enclosed fire chamber. This has the added advantage that smoky smells are virtually non-existent. All wood burning stoves on sale in the UK should include an efficiency percentage in line with British and European standards, representing the proportion of energy in a fuel transferred to heating the room.

Safety
Stoves are much safer when properly used compared to open fires. The stove's heat-resistant glass will screen any potential sparks and prevent lighted fuel from rolling out.

Planning
Do I need planning permission to install a stove? It is a legal requirement to notify your local authority Building Control department. HOWEVER, In England and Wales, when you use a specialist stove installer who is registered on the HETAS competent persons scheme there is no need for time-consuming and expensive Building Control notification. We will be able to issue a Building Regulations compliance certificate and register this with HETAS. HETAS is the official body recognised by the Government to approve wood burning and solid fuel domestic heating appliances. We are HETAS registered.

The Stove Industry Alliance (SIA)

The SIA is an association of stove manufacturers and distributors, wood fuel suppliers, flue and glass manufacturers and industry supporters like HETAS and Kiwa. With 40 members, it is able to represent the stove industry with government departments such as DEFRA and BEIS. DEFRA, BEIS and the chair of the Select Committee on the Environmental Food and Rural Affairs Select Committee see the SIA as the voice of the industry.
Ecodesign Ready stoves have been welcomed by DEFRA, as a significant way to reduce emissions. DEFRA has included the Ecodesign Ready scheme in its plans to improve air quality. In order to
